It's exam results time. Lifetracks caught up with some A-level students in Manchester to find out what results they achieved.

It's Jasmine and I'm from Hyde. I've got enough, two As and a B to get into St. Andrews University for medicine. I'm so giddy, I've been panicking for the last two months and now it's all paid off.

Some people do really well, but there are also those who don't do so well. Liz remembers the day she received her results.

Liz: When I got my A-level results they weren't quite what I was expecting and I didn't actually get into the two universities that I'd wanted to go to which was, at the time, York and Warwick Universities. Both of the courses were English courses so I had to have a complete re-think; sort of re-assess the situation. Obviously I wasn't going to go to university that year, so I basically decided to follow a second route and do an Art Foundation, which at the time I'd not really thought about doing as a sort of career or education thing.

Guy: I got an A, B, C and I got into Oxford Brookes which makes me happy.

Girl : I got an A and two Bs and I'm going to Manchester Metropolitan and doing teaching for primary schools. It's what I hoped to get but I only needed Cs to get in so I was really, really happy that I got it.

Liz: I studied Art A-level, yes, but it was more of like a filler subject than anything. I'd done all the kind of English, Maths that your parents expect you to do and Art was kind of the fun thing that I'd chosen just to fill a few hours. It was kind of nice because I was treating it like a gap year almost, but I wasn't just lazing around the house or anything, this Art Foundation actually turned out to be something that I really, really enjoyed. It was really unexpected and I found that I was actually quite good at it when I put my mind to it.

My name is Jamal. Surprisingly I got two As and a C. For my AS grades I got three Bs, but no, I managed to move two of those up so I'm really happy with that. I'm going to go to Liverpool University and studying architecture. Last year I was thinking I'll be going to a different university, but when I moved up my grades this gives me an opportunity to go to a better place. It's going to be amazing I think.

Liz: I applied to do graphics at Manchester University because I'd had time to reflect and re-assess the situation because I'd had that gap year out. I realised that I wasn't really suited to a city like Warwick, I realised I wanted to be in Manchester where lots of fun things are happening, lots of music. Now I'm successfully employed as a graphic designer and I'm going to be in Manchester. So yeah, it's all worked out for the best actually. Missing out on the grades is the best thing that could've actually ever happened to me.

My name's Trust. I got two As and a B. I'm going to go to medical school. I'm dead excited, I can't wait. I expected to fail because physics was so hard and I got an A in physics. I'm going to go to medical school. I cannot believe this, I just can't believe it. My mum was just so nervous yesterday, she slept early yesterday – she didn't want to know. They are going to be so happy. I can't believe it!
