The Army Further Education Bursary

You might have been considering a career in the army, but also want to continue studying after your GCSEs/Standard Grades. If this sounds like you, and want to combine the two, this new scheme might offer a solution.

"While at college, the army will help prepare you for life in the army with work experience."

What is it?

The Further Education Bursary Scheme (FEBS) or the FE Award Scheme in Scotland, is an initiative from the British Army aimed at young adults aged between 16 and 32 interested in pursuing a career in the army. It gives grants for attending college, completing a relevant vocational qualification and then pursuing a career in the British Army.

How much is a grant worth?

You'll receive £1000 for each year at college (subject to meeting commitments, and up to four years), then a further £1000 on completing basic army training.

Do I get anything else?

While at college, the army will help prepare you for life in the army with work experience and you will be mentored by an army contact.

What can I study?

You can study level 2 and level 3 qualifications in vocational courses, including engineering, construction, sport, business, administration and law, ICT, arts, media and publishing, hospitality and catering, as well as public services.

Do I have to join the army when I finish?

Yes, and you may have to pay the money back if you decide not to join. However, this will be done on a case-by-case basis, and will not be enforced if there are medical reasons for you not being able to join.
