Gap year volunteering

After taking a year out, Nerdy decided to gain experience by volunteering in her local community, including providing sex education with the Terrence Higgins Trust. She's found that the skills she's picked up will stand her in good stead when she attends university and eventually starts looking for a job. As she says, "It's shaped me, so it'll shape you."

Volunteering helps Nerdy enhance her skills & experience

Help

Like Nerdy, volunteering is a great way to help you gain vital skills and experience to enhance your CV and boost your chances of finding employment. Search online right now for opportunities using Do-it, the national volunteering database.

What next?

  1. Work out how much time you can spare and at what time of the day you're usually free.
  2. If you're looking for work, make a note of any requirements you lack for the jobs you want. You can then look for the same skills in volunteering opportunities.
  3. Search for opportunities online. We've got thousands of regularly updated volunteering opportunities in the Start volunteering section and there are featured opportunities on vinspired.com. Register with TimeBank and your interests and skills will be matched to volunteering opportunities in your area. The Community Service Volunteers website has a section dedicated to opportunities for 16-25 year-olds and Reach provides opportunities for volunteers with career skills.
  4. Find your local volunteer centre and find out more about volunteering in your region: If you are in England - Volunteering England; Northern Ireland - Volunteer Development Agency website; Wales - Wales Council for Voluntary Action website; or Scotland - Volunteer Development Scotland website.
