Two Lifetracks volunteers head to the Regional Skills Day in Coventry to find out how to make the most out of a jobs fair. These places are often seem overwhelming - rammed, noisy and with a bewildering range of different stalls to visit. But, as Bianca and Rob find out, there are plenty of ways to make sure you come away with more than just free pens and sweets.
What next?
- Find out where your nearest fair is, which companies are going, and whether it has an industry focus.
- Do your research on the companies exhibiting at the fair. Make a shortlist of the ones you want to talk to, find out as much as possible about them and prepare some questions to ask.
- Sort your CV out. Check it for spelling and grammatical errors and make sure any recent experience or achievements are included.
- Find a smart outfit for the day and make sure it's clean and ironed the night before.
- Don't forget to follow up any contacts you make. Drop them a polite email and say you enjoyed meeting them and ask any further questions you may have. Try to stay in touch at regular intervals to find out about any job openings you could apply for.
- If you're not a graduate, there are still careers fairs for you. Watch our video (above) to find out more.
